The class is designed with older infant school and younger junior children in mind, with a supportive and encouraging approach that allows children to build confidence at their own pace. It is perfect for students with  space to build creativity, teamwork and performance skills in a fun, supportive environment but also allowing the more confident child the chance to expand their performance skills.

What Is Scallywags?

Scallywags is our new drama class for children in Years 2 to 4. It has been created for pupils who would benefit from an additional step between our Little Rascals and Bandits groups.

The class may be particularly suitable for:

  • Confident Year 2 pupils who have outgrown Little Rascals

  • Children who are ready for a longer weekly drama session

  • Younger Junior School  pupils who are not quite ready for Bandits

  • Confident Year 3 and 4 students who are keen to expand their performance skills

  • Children who enjoy storytelling, characters and imaginative play

  • Pupils who want to build confidence and creative thinking skills

Scallywags is not an ability-based or intermediate class. It is designed around age and stage, recognising that children develop confidence, concentration and independence at different times.

The aim is to give children a positive next step without rushing them into a large broader-age range  group they may not yet feel ready to join.

Why We Created The Scallywags Class

Scallywags has been created as a natural stepping stone between Little Rascals and Bandits.

Some confident Year 2 pupils may be ready for more developed drama activities, while some younger junior school children may benefit from extra time before moving into Bandits.

This class gives children the chance to enjoy longer sessions, build confidence and develop greater independence at a pace that feels right for them.

What Happens In Scallywags Drama Classes?

Each Scallywags session combines imaginative drama activities with opportunities to build communication, teamwork and early performance skills.

Children may take part in:

  • Drama games and warm-ups

  • Storytelling and creative adventures

  • Character exploration

  • Role play and scene creation

  • Voice and movement activities

  • Listening and concentration games

  • Group challenges

  • Ensemble activities

  • Early rehearsal and performance work

Sessions are energetic and creative while still providing a clear structure. Children are encouraged to contribute ideas, listen to others and take an active role in the group.

No previous drama experience is needed. Children only need curiosity, imagination and a willingness to join in.

Building Confidence, Creativity & Teamwork

Our Scallywags classes are designed to support children as they become more confident and independent within a drama group.

Building Confidence

Children are given opportunities to speak, share ideas and try new activities in a supportive setting.

They do not need to be naturally outgoing. Quieter children can take part at their own pace while gradually becoming more comfortable expressing themselves and working with others.

Encouraging Creativity

Storytelling, characters and imaginative challenges give children space to explore their own ideas.

They may invent stories, step into different roles or work with the group to solve a creative challenge. These activities help children think imaginatively and become more confident sharing their suggestions.

Developing Teamwork

Drama gives children regular opportunities to listen, collaborate and support one another.

Through shared activities, pupils learn how to take turns, respond to other people’s ideas and contribute to a group. It is also a positive way to meet children and build friendships outside school.

Preparing Children For Bandits

Bandits is our Junior School Age drama programme for children in Years 3 to 6. The longer sessions allow pupils to explore acting, stagecraft, teamwork and performance in greater depth.

Scallywags helps children prepare for this next stage by introducing:

  • Longer creative activities

  • Greater independence within the group

  • More developed character work

  • Collaborative storytelling

  • Clearer group responsibilities

  • Increased listening and concentration

  • Early rehearsal and performance skills

Children do not need to achieve a set level before progressing. Scallywags simply gives them more time and experience so that the move into Bandits can feel comfortable and natural.
